The Body as Home

What does ‘embodiment’ really ask of us?  We are often encouraged to ‘settle, and come into our body’ as if this is simple and easy thing to do – but what if our body doesn’t feel like a safe place to be? What if ‘coming into the body’ feels a bit scary and alarming? For some, the body may even feel like an enemy or an adversary.

Over three days, using the unique and direct experience of the systemic constellation approach, we will confidentially and carefully explore our relationship with our own body. In pairs and very small groups, we will listen directly to what our body wishes we knew and understood. We will give our body a voice to express its needs and desires through representation – working ‘blind’ if we prefer. Through a carefully held programme, we will discover what blocks us from deeply engaging with our own bodily wisdom, and what prevents us from feeling the gift of our life force fully. We will explore how our body feels about our judgements, self-loathing and moments of self-attack, and discover what is needed for peace and reconciliation.

Our body is the home of our soul, and the soul expresses itself through the somatic experiences of the body.  When we are disconnected from aspects of our own body-knowing we also lose touch with the messages of the soul. In Body as Home we work with body and soul to reveal what needs to be seen and integrated now in service of our own flourishing.

Who is it for?

This course is for all those who wish to gain a fuller and direct understanding, from a systemic constellation perspective, of the relationship that they have with their body.

What will your learn/develop?

This course is evocative, rather than didactic. It is experiential rather than theoretical. We focus on discovering what we don’t know, rather than what we do. Most constellations that work with the body do so through physical symptoms, health issues, and how these may relate to our entanglements in the unfinished stories from past generations.

Body as Home is different.  In this course we will be with the realm of the body as the fundamental ground of our being. We will journey from shame to befriending; from isolation to inclusion, from rejection to acceptance.

As we bring our collective presence and awareness to the realm of the body, so it reveals itself to us. We will work together to gain new insight and understanding of what stands in the way of us fully receiving the gift of life and recognising the triumph of how life has successfully travelled down so many generations to reach us and animate us with our own life’s purpose.

Together we will hold the question ‘what do we truly long for when we hold the gift of life in our hands?’

Course leaders

Body as Home will be led by Gaye Donaldson and Sheila McCarthy-Dodd.  Having worked together on their own body issues, they designed the course in 2020 realising that this way of using the systemic constellation approach was both innovative and exciting, but also life changing.  This will be the sixth time they have held the Body as Home process together. Each time they run it they are reminded of the power and potential of the process. Meeting the body in this way is a journey that is important to them both, and the program is very close to their hearts.

Gaye and Sheila are Directors and Senior Faculty members of CSC. They have both been involved with Constellation work since the 1990s, meeting at one of Bert Hellinger’s London workshops in 1996.

Gaye Donaldson (BACP)

Managing Director of the Centre and teaching faculty member. She has trained extensively in both family and organisational constellations. Gaye facilitates workshops, and works as a systemic coach & consultant both in the UK and abroad. She has recently been working in conflict resolution in the Middle East through the organisation ‘Healing the Wounds of History’.

Sheila McCarthy-Dodd, (MBACP)

Sheila is a Director and senior faculty member of CSC. She has trained and worked extensively in Systemic and Family Constellations since 1996 and leads regular family constellation workshops in Ireland and the UK. Sheila has a well-established therapy practice in Gloucestershire for individuals, couples and supervision.
